About two weeks ago Volney JORDAN of this village (Dayton), was taken with rheumatism from which he suffered severely for about a week; then he was taken with la grippe which terminated in pneumonia from which he died at 5 0’clock last Monday morning. The interment took place at the East Dayton cemetery Tuesday at 2 p.m. He was a young man of good moral principals and was highly respected by the people in general. He was born and reared to manhood in this neighborhood, and with the excep-
tion of two years in Nebraska, had always resided here. He leaves a wife and four small children besides numerous other relatives to mourn his heath. The bereaved family have the heart felt sympathy of this entire community in this their sad bereavement. The funeral services were to have taken place at the M.E. church on Wed. at 11 a.m. but owing to the illness of Rev. J. S. Dinsmore, of Monticello, who had been engaed to conduct them, there were none. He was buried circa March, 1890 at East Dayton Cemetery, Dayton, Green County, Wisconsin, United States of America.

He came to South Dakota in 1910 and settled on a farm near Iroquois with his parents. After spending 20 years as proprietor of the municipal electric plant in Iroquois, he moved his family to Onida. During his many years in Onida he was widely known through Sully County as a highly respected sheriff and longtime rural route mail carrier.

He farmed in Sully City until 1933. Was sheriff of Sully City from 1941-1952. Was a mail carrier for 20 years, and retired in 1969 and moved to Pierre. He died after a long illness.
